Cashiers UMC is a United Methodist Congregation. We believe that each and every person is a beloved child of God, created in the image of God.  We believe that God is manifest in the person of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior and that we continue to be guided by the witness of Christ in the world and by the power of the Holy Spirit. The presence of God is manifest in our current circumstances in the way the followers ( imitators) of Christ live out the mission of Christ in our daily lives. While we are imperfect in our efforts, we seek to be generous in our hospitality, open and welcoming to all, act as agents of Christ's mercy and love in this world, specifically in Cashiers and the connected communities in which we live.  The Bible is the living word of God, while written to a specific people in a specific time, the message of scripture can be interpreted and applied to the lives of believers in a way that is real and life affirming for all generations that follow. Cashiers UMC is a vibrant worshiping community including folks who were born and raised here in the beautiful mountains of Western North Carolina as well as those who have moved here from other places and those simply here to visit and enjoy God's creation.  We hope, whomever you are, that you will experience the love of Christ in this place and find a place to call home, where you can put down roots, pull up a seat at the abundant banquet of God's kingdom and live into who God called and created you to be.  In the late 1800’s, twenty five pastors were assigned as circuit riders in Western North Carolina which covered the Cashiers area. The Reverend Eugene Blake, who served from 1879-1880, was the first recorded pastor for this area. By the early 1900’s, a pastor was assigned to serve only Highlands and Cashiers with the parsonage located in Highlands. It was not until Paul W. Matthias came to Cashiers in 1965 that the church was served by a full time pastor.  Prior to the building of the first Methodist Church in Cashiers, the worship services were held in the Hampton Schoolhouse on General Wade Hampton’s property. This building was located in the area of the present Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd. When the Hampton Schoolhouse burned, the Methodists decided to build their own church rather than repair the existing structure.  The Trustees of the Methodist Church were granted a lot on July 28, 1884 where the first church was built and the present church now stands. In 1944, two small rooms were added for use as Sunday School rooms. On July 22, 1956, ground was broken and the Education Building was added. Worship services were held in the new building and plans for a new church were underway. Later, additional property was received from Alma C. Orr for the sum of $5. The old church was razed and on Sunday, October 16, 1960, the cornerstone was laid for the new church. The pastor was the Reverend John C. Vernon who held the first service on May 14, 1961.  The present worship areas and educational wing have served Cashiers United Methodist Church since 1961; and continue to be a community base for worship, local non-profit organizations, fellowship, service and care for the community. The United Methodist Church is a global denomination that opens hearts, opens minds and opens doors through active engagement with our world. The mission of The United Methodist Church is to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world. A United Methodist is someone who joins in that mission by putting faith and love into action. We believe that God loves all people, and that we share in expressing that love. So the United Methodist tradition emphasizes God's grace and in serving others. We believe that Jesus Christ is the fullest expression of God's love--showing us the fullness of God's care through Jesus' teachings, death and resurrection. John Wesley started the Methodist movement in 18th century England. Amy Spivey ###### PASTOR #### Rev. Wonyeong Lee ###### Associate Pastor #### Bryan Heller ###### WORSHIP DIRECTOR and Pianist #### **Cashiers United Methodist Church** Pastor Amy has been serving as a pastor since 2001. She served as the Associate Pastor at Cashiers UMC from 2004-2008. Since then, she has served in the British Methodist Church, Hinton Rural Life and most recently St. Luke’s UMC in Hickory. She, her husband Tim and their daughter Laura-Clare are excited to be back in Cashiers. Pastor Wonyeong, originally from South Korea, is a recent graduate from Candler School of Theology with a strong foundation in family ministry as well as a passion for older adults. His gifts for ministry and his passion for all God’s people made choosing him as our associate pastor an easy choice. He and his wife Esther , are thrilled about beginning their ministry with us. Caroline, a native of Brevard and has served as church administrator since 2022. She sings with the Cashiers Community Chorus, and volunteers with a variety of local non-profits. Caroline is married to Kenny and together have a precious daughter Abby. Olga joined CUMC in 2025. Originally from the Ukraine, Olga has lived in Cashiers for over 10 years and is a wonderful asset to our team. Olga is married to Alex and has two wonderful daughters Katherine and Sophia. Bryan Heller, originally from West Palm Beach Florida, has lived in North Carolina for some time. He owes a great deal of his music education to Alexander Dreyfoos Jr. School of the Arts. It was his studies there that led to a full paid scholarship to Western Carolina University, where he majored in Commercial & Electronic Music, with an emphasis on performance & teaching.  Bryan has taught at both Smoky Mountain High School and Blue Ridge School & Early College, is the accompanist for the Cashiers Community Chorus, has his own private teaching studio and is the creator of his original program "Experience the Mountains", which is a combination of his visuals of North Carolina's natural beauty with his composition of original music. Perhaps one of Bryan's greatest achievements was accompanying the Smoky Mountain High School Concert Choir during a concert held at Carnegie Hall in New York City. Today, Bryan lives in Cashiers with his wife Terra, and has three children - Alexander, Susannah and Vincent.  **Mary Beth** **Brody** is a local Financial Advisor, talented Soprano, co-leads our choir and is our handbell director . She has over 40 years of experience leading church choirs around the nation. **Sarah Hall** is a retired music teacher from Blue Ridge School. She not only co-leads our choir but also leads the Cashiers Community Youth Choir **Tonya Gaddy**, is our Minister of Hospitality. She ensures our space is beautiful, clean and well stocked so that we can have worship and community events in an amazing space. **David Hunter** or facilities expert is a carpenter by trade and a fantastic asset to help keep our church functioning at its fullest. Want to serve within the church community? Lot's of opportunities are available. Liturgists are need to make announcements and read scripture during worship. Greeters help to make visitors feel welcome and included in the life of the church. Ushers welcome people as they enter worship, assist where needed and lead the congregation during the offering and communion AV-tech savvy is not required- run worship slides, cameras and live-stream of worship Service in the community is vital to our Christian Witness in Cashiers and Beyond. Join us in one or more of the many ways we have to be the hands and feet of Christ. **Matthew 25: 35-36 " for I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me,  I was naked and you gave me clothing, I was sick and you took care of me, I was in prison and you visited me.’ "** Donating your time is not the only way to serve at CUMC. There are recurring costs to operating and staffing our ministry, as well as helping us do work throughout our community and the world. We believe that God calls us to give, and to give generously. We are accustomed to visitors since much of our congregation are seasonal or vacationing in the beautiful mountains. While it is a traditional worship experience it is relaxed and comfortable. We have an amazing classically trained pianist and the choir is a beautiful and skillful part of our worship with a handbell choir in worship once a month. We offer communion on the first Sunday of the month and observe an "open table". This means that you do not have to be a member of our church or even baptized to receive communion. It is a means of God's grace that is offered to anyone who desires a relationship with Christ and to know his love more fully. At Sunday Kids Worship, children grow in joy, learn from God’s Word, and build friendships. And you are invited! We will begin with Genesis in January and will continue all the way through Revelation. Yes. We will read the whole Bible in a year. I can already guess what you might be thinking. *There is no way I can read that much scripture. I don’t think that is possible.* Or maybe you have a different perspective. *That sounds interesting. I have never done that before and would like to give it a try.*  Don't worry. The Bible Year isn’t about perfection. It is about curiosity and asking questions. It is about growing in faith and discipleship. And there are different ways for you to connect with The Bible Year through Cashiers UMC. through Hyde Park UMC). We will share the podcast information each week. share more information about group opportunities soon.) *The Bible Year* published resources reference the Common English Bible (CEB) translation. Throughout the year, we may also use the New Revised Standard Version (NRSV) or the New International Version (NIV) in worship. You may use the translation that is most typical for you, and you may consider looking at other translations along the way as well. If you are wondering, there will be several times throughout the year when we veer from the readings and incorporate special scripture texts that relate to special seasons.
